Now let us first start off by saying FREESTYLING and IMPROVING are NOT the same. I like to say that freestyling is mixing and matching a compilation of styles to create a flow of moment. On the other hand I see improving as a flow of movement utilizing one foundational style of dance. I can see how others may think these are interchangeable, but that's not how my brain works. So here are my
3 tips:
1. When you are starting either, you want to clear your mind and let go. Try to eliminate any preconceived phrases and explore where your creativity can go. At first you might struggle. Freestyling and Improving requires that you live in your most physically vulnerable state. You have to give yourself permission to just be yourself. Utilizing music and taking advantage of a steady beat can jumpstart this process. A simple isolation of a body part and then adding on another can also be a quick and easy way to free yourself.
2. Try not to over do it. If you are like me and literally have 1,000 tabs open at a time on your laptop, you understand the importance of taking one thing at a time. If you over do it you can become frustrated, which could lead to a creative block.
3. Last but not least, try not to judge yourself. Let loose. It is okay if you fall or you don't hit a certain move a certain way. It is YOUR journey. Free yourself from abusing your creativity.
